VOLUNTEERING AS A BEFRIENDER

As a not for profit organisation we offer 'befriending' services where someone will regularly visit a person in their own home or a location that is mutually convenient, or will phone them for a chat. This service can be delivered through volunteers who are able give a little time each week and build a relationship with a carefully selected customer.

A typical visit could include a chatting about your lives, you may like to play cards, chess or go for a walk. How you spend your time is entirely up to you and the person you are supporting but the befriender will always provide a listening ear.

What do we provide to support you in your volunteering role?

We know that volunteering can have a cost implication and for this reason we support all our volunteers by covering direct expenses such as the cost of fuel if you drive or public transport if you dont.

Whilst there is no direct payment we may provide technology should you need it on a loan basis and we may invite you to join us for outreach events, fund raisers and outings as a guest.

What do we ask of you as a befriender?

Once the initial introduction has been made we simply ask that you continue to meet with and/or call, message or support the person you are paired with frequently (one contact a week minimum). We also ask that you keep us ‘in the loop’ with a quick message via our media channels, email or quick phone call. This is so we may mention the good work you are doing in our funding bids to ensure we keep enough money rolling in to support the services we provide to the community.

Why choose to volunteer as a befriender?

Befriending can be a vital link between the people you support, yourself and the outside world. Maybe you just fancy someone new to chat to and want to help someone else who is in a similar situation.
